Many of you will remember the old Southwell homestead, used as a residence by the Sergel family and later Southwell
Headmasters and staff.
The Homestead has recently been
set up as a space for the Southwell community to use for meetings, quiet break out spaces for staff, learning and social gatherings. There is also a small apartment within for accommodation for out of town guests. Memorabilia from years past are displayed throughout, providing a source of interest for visiting old boys and girls.
It is here that we held our first function for 2019; a social get-together. It was great to see new faces, catch up with old friends and to welcome some of the younger alumni.
June saw us hold our AGM following
a chapel service. It is a pleasure to welcome old girl Kirstie Petch on to the committee, joining me, Tony Knowling, Brett Maber, Blair Edwards, John Libby, John Heathcote, Andy Bryant and,

Headmaster Jason Speedy. Also at the AGM, we bestowed an honorary membership to the Association to Mrs Maureen Barrett in appreciation of 33 years of wonderful service to our School.
It’s fabulous to see old boys and girls returning to celebrate their weddings. This has seen us start a maintenance programme on the old boys’ garden
as this space has proved popular, along with the chapel, for celebrations. Another OBGA project is the recording and naming of significant trees on the school grounds, some dating back hundreds of years.
We have also enjoyed having many
old boys and girls return for visits and tours of the school, some who have
not been back for over 70 years. It is a delight to show them the changes that have taken place and to listen to their stories from their time here. There are often reoccurring themes – the chapel, brick making, boarding school food and cold swims in the pool!
Congratulations to Canterbury House
for taking the 2019 OBGA House Singing Trophy. All houses performed their rendition of ‘I’m a Believer’ by the Monkees. Well done to all students and staff who took part in this year’s event.
Our Year 13 old boys and girls will return at the end of July for an afternoon with our Year 8s, taking a tour of the school and catching up with old friends and staff.
The annual School opera often evokes memories for past students; this
year we will be treated to ‘The Little Mermaid’.
Term 4 sees us once again hosting our annual Cricket Day on Sunday
20 October. This is always a well- attended, fun day with old boys and girls playing against staff, parents and current students - we look forward
to catching up with you all at these events.
