In 1911 a gift was made. It was the gift of a school to its community, and that gift was made for us all to share in. Since its inception, Southwell School has sought to achieve in all areas at the highest level and to uphold strong values and traditions.
The Southwell School Foundation is
an integral and valuable part of the Southwell School community. The people on the Foundation have a strong and special connection with Southwell and they have the best interests
of the School at heart. One of the Foundation’s key roles is to manage and grow the financial gifts, bequests and endowments that are made to the School.
All Foundation trustees are co-opted to the role. They are chosen for their particular skills and their appointment must be ratified by Southwell’s Trust Board.
MELANIE O’NEILL, CHAIRMAN
Currently there are seven Foundation trustees, together with two ex-officio members, Southwell’s Headmaster, Jason Speedy, and Rachel Krielen, who provides our administrative support.
At our annual planning meeting in February, we identified our goals. Unsurprisingly, one main goal that we have is to grow the Foundation funds that we manage. Currently we manage funds of approximately $1.3 million. We envision a future Foundation where sufficient money has been donated
to ensure that Southwell is able to continue, no matter the economic climate. As with any private school a large endowment fund is crucial to future-proof Southwell’s longevity.
Wanting to assist Southwell’s successful continuation into the future was
my motivation behind joining the Foundation. My husband describes his time at Southwell as the best years of his schooling life. For him, Southwell was an experience where it was as if
everything he touched turned to gold. We wanted that experience for our children. Our children participated
in the many areas that Southwell offers and like all parents, we enjoyed watching our children flourish and develop.
Recently the Foundation was contacted by an Old Boy, now in his 70s. He had not maintained a connection with Southwell over the years but now wished to make a donation. He said that attending Southwell had given him the start for his successful life. What
a great testament to Southwell and its staff at the time. This sentiment is one which I am sure would be echoed by the majority of Southwell’s old boys and girls living all over the world. Ensuring a successful start in their schooling for Southwell’s current and future children is what the Foundation is all about.
