Congratulations to Holly Mills (2013 – 2014), Year 12 at Waikato Dio. Holly has been selected in the Rowing New Zealand Junior team to represent New Zealand at the Junior World Rowing Championships at Racice, Czech Republic, in August.
Congratulations to Meghan Hood
who represented New Zealand at the Whistler Cup in Canada. Meghan
was skiing at this international event for the New Zealand FIS Team. She competed in the Super G which is a long speed event and in the SG and Slalom. Many of the competitors at this event will be seen internationally in the future representing their countries as Olympians.
Allan Deed, Old Boy (1935- 1938). Whilst on holiday from Sydney, Allan visited
the School with his daughter Allison Roe. Allan, one of our older old boys, is still working as a busy general practitioner. He has fond memories of Southwell and was a very keen sportsman during his time here. His 1937 Intermediate Long Jump record remained unbroken for nearly 50 years. During his visit the 1st XI Cricket team enjoyed a win over St Peter’s.
Congratulations to Andrew Macky, Old Boy (2002 - 2003) on his marriage to Holly Ryan in All Hallows Chapel, in March 2018. Andrew is the son of Old Boy, William Macky (1973 - 1976)
It is the third year in a row that Victoria Chanwai (2011 - 2014) has been selected for the New Zealand Secondary Schools Symphony Orchestra (NZSSSO).
Victoria, playing in a first violin positon, was offered the position of joint concert master, a true honour indeed and due recognition of her talent. The NZSSSO
is widely recognized as a significant training ground for young players aspiring to join the New Zealand Youth Orchestra and ultimately pursue careers as professional musicians. Playing with the NZSSSO has been a highlight for Victoria these past three years.
Victoria is currently in her final year at St Paul’s Collegiate and hopes to study medicine next year.
It was a pleasure to welcome Rita Davies back at Southwell to present the prizes at the Junior Swimming Sports. Rita’s son, Mark Davies, (1962 – 1967) was an accomplished swimmer, winning Southwell and Waikato titles.
