SCHOOL SNIPPETS
Congratulations to Lucy O’Meeghan - Southwell’s Young Citizen of the Year, winner of the Altrusa Award 2018. Lucy is a sel ess, caring person.
She demonstrates a vitality for life and a positive attitude that makes her a superb role model. Lucy works diligently to achieve her goals. She is a quiet leader who injects energy into anything she is involved in. A great Southwell citizen!
Our Year 8 Waimaths team of Sarah Crowther, Eddie Bi and Alex Liu took out rst place in this year’s Year
8 Waimaths competition, held at Rototuna Junior High School in August. This is a fantastic achievement and the standard of the competition was extremely high. Congratulations to our team and congratulations also to our Year 7 team who placed third in the Year 7 competition.
Our four instrumental groups took
part in the Waikato Primary Schools’ Band and Orchestra Festival, held at Te Awamutu Intermediate. They played incredibly well and were outstanding ambassadors for Southwell School. Each group performed multiple pieces. The Southwell String Orchestra received a Gold Award, and the Jazz Band, Symphony Orchestra and Wind Band were all awarded silvers.
Two communities, with one special bond - rugby. It started off as a crazy idea over a quiet coffee. The idea of joining Raglan club rugby players with Southwell school students to form
an U13 open weight rugby team. A team to battle it out with the best.
This amalgamation was incredibly successful. The team went on a journey from muddy elds around the Waikato to the top-class turf of FMG Waikato Stadium, where the team won the 2018 U13 Championship. The players & parents were courageous & committed all season. They all believed in the method behind the madness, shared by two coaches who were bonded like brothers. The boys played for each other, their families & their communities, forming friendships and memories to last a lifetime.
