YEAR 8 CAMP: NATIONAL PARK
The Year 8 Camp always has a level of status above that of the other camps - and with good reason. Students need resilience and common sense to get through the week unscathed. This particular camp tested our endurance and fortitude due to the weather - the camp now fondly remembered by many as the Damp Camp. However, everyone got on with had to be done and spirits were not dampened by the rain.
As usual, activities followed previous years; hiking the Tongariro Crossing, camping overnight in the Waipakihi Valley, white water rafting down the Tongariro River and mountain biking, abseiling and climbing the high ropes at Tihoi. The most challenging activity proved to be the Tongariro Crossing due to the weather, which was dismal. All but one class managed to complete
the crossing. Visibility for all classes was markedly reduced due to continual drizzle, and that, combined with high winds, made everyone involved realise the importance of having the right clothing. The quote, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing” was certainly tested.
Solid organisation is always a key to a successful event, backed up by having
a group of people who are invested in ensuring that every child has fun on camp. It is for this that we thank the fantastic group of parents we had on camp with us. The care and commitment that each parent demonstrated in supporting their pastoral care groups needs to be acknowledged. All the parents were willing to get involved, help out in any and every way possible, while making sure that no child was left out.
As camps go, this one will certainly
be remembered. It is remarkable that lasting memories can be made and mindset developed due to one great week of fun and adventure. 2018 Camp certainly set up the year to be a success.
