PRIZE GIVING ADDRESSES
HEADMASTER’S ADDRESS
Good morning Archbishop in Meritus Sir David Moxon, Fellows, Trust Board Members, Old Boys and Girls, Special Guests, Parents, Guardians, Grandparents and Students.
Welcome to the 107th Southwell School Prize Giving.
What a pleasure it is to be here this
morning as we celebrate 2018 at Southwell. Individually, in groups and in teams, boys and girls, staff and parents we have achieved an incredible amount. 2018 has been full of purposeful action and learning. As people
in 2018 we have all felt the joys of success, and learnt to be resilient through challenging moments, disappointments and losses.
Every moment to me is a learning moment.
Daily I witness our girls, boys, staff and parents involved in so many learning moments on campus and off campus. Each moment can be speci c to its cause, like academic learning, sport or cultural. However, all have a social and emotional effect on us. It is fascinating viewing and I learn so much from all of you as I observe and interact with you.
I believe we are fortunate to be together in a community where we can strive daily to be better people and learn from the many situations around us.
So much of our learning is observational and at times very direct. I trust that through this 2018 year at Southwell that we have grown in our wisdom and realise that good relationships with others underpin and produce the best learning.
Living 24/7 on site with our boarding children and staff is a fully immersed lifestyle and I love it. The personalised village feel of Southwell boarding enhances the culture that our day students arrive into each morning. The close, family-style boarding experience sets our young people up to be independent, tolerant, respectful and understanding of how to interact
and collaborate with fellow humans - key competencies in our changing world that we live in.
We have strong daily and weekly routines at Southwell and starting each day as a whole village in our beautiful All Hallows Chapel or in this Great Hall allows us all to be on the same page, with simple clear messaging, with a focus on values and relationships. Starting our Southwell days in this way
allows our start to be peaceful, mindful and re ectful. In a fast world we need to treasure and appreciate this aspect of Southwell life.
Southwell is fortunate to have such good leadership and governance.
Thank you to the Fellows for their support and love of Southwell, created over time.
In April we named our new Year 2 to
4 building - The Murray and Ann Day Building. As Fellows, Murray and Ann have contributed to Southwell life fully over generations.
In June we awarded Fellow, Mr Glenn Holmes with the Southwell Associate of Honour, for his life of commitment and service to Southwell, and we warmly celebrated as a whole school.
In Term 3, Mrs Rita Davies, a Southwell mother and great supporter of Southwell, kindly gifted a signi cant sum of money to the Southwell Foundation which has been created into the annual Rita Davies Scholarship. This Scholarship can be awarded to Southwell families who experience trauma or hardship - enabling them to continue at Southwell.
