RUGBY
Over 100 rugby boys and girls took to the elds every Saturday in 2018 to represent Southwell in amongst the mud, blood and oods of a typical rugby season. It was great to have more parents on board this year to help as coaches, managers, jersey washers and number one cheerleaders!
The 8th Grade and 10th Grade teams
were superbly coached by dedicated staff and parents who ensured that the next generation of Southwell rugby players were taught the correct techniques and mental toughness to get them through a game and ensure maximum fun on the eld! At 21kg, our 8th Grade superman, Cooper Moana
was the lightest player at Southwell, but the bravest by far. The 10th Grade started off
the year with a bang with a narrow loss in the Plate Final at the annual Hopuhopu 10-a-side tournament - a great season soon followed this early ourish.
From the get-go, the 11th Grade looked sharp, with a narrow loss in the Cup Final
of the Hopuhopu 10-a-side. They went from strength to strength, nishing 3rd overall
in their Saturday competition. Southwell were blessed with two 12th Grade teams. Southwell White were coached by a team
of super-dads and even though results did not go their way, experience and exposure in this competition put them in good stead for 2019. Southwell Blue showed great promise as semi- nalists in the Hopuhopu 10-a-side. Their season was a rollercoaster of results. Finally ending up a respectable 3rd overall in the 12th Grade.
Without enough to eld a team, the Southwell 13th Grade joined forces with Raglan to form an incredible team that cleaned up the competition - they were unbeaten all season, including winning a spectacular nal at Waikato Stadium in front of a crowd of over 1000.
The success of the 11th, 12th and 13th Grade teams fed into a healthy 1st & 2nd
XV season. A big win early on against Saint Kentigern College boosted spirits followed by a hard-fought, hearty win against old rivals Hereworth. The 2nd XV followed suit at Hereworth with a nail-biting three-point win. Huntley proved to be an even tougher, but more rewarding xture with the 1st & 2nd XV both edging out wins in tiresome conditions. A heartbreaking loss in the dying seconds saw the Tutor Shield slip out of Southwell’s grasp against Dilworth. However, the 2nd XV lifted heads with a convincing win.
The 2nd XV winning streak came to an end with a galant 39 -14 loss to King’s. But the 1st XV nished the xture season with a heroic and historic win against King’s 1st XV in a physical battle away from home. Southwell had not beaten a King’s 1st XV in the last 20 years, so the boys were ecstatic with this monumental achievement to end the year.
