THE CHRONICLE
MAKING A DIFFERENCE
RITA DAVIES
FORMER SOUTHWELL PARENT R‘THE GIFT OF LEARNING’
ita Davies had always planned to leave a gift to Southwell in her will. Earlier this year Rita decided she would allow herself to enjoy
the pleasure of giving, by creating a scholarship for students who would otherwise be unable to have the bene ts of a Southwell education. With wise investment the fund will be able to provide scholarships long- term. It is a gift that will carry on for generations, as the gift of education is life changing and irrevocable.
Rita believes that you should always try to better yourself. In fact, this sprightly, vivacious octogenarian still has golf lessons, even after playing for more than sixty years! Due to her determination Rita has had a very handy handicap.
Initially a farm girl from Matamata, she grew up in a family of seven. Rita married Ken Davies and together
they established Davies Transport. Ken (pictured bottom right) had an incredible work ethic, working 12
hour days. This commitment saw
the business thrive and was a part
of their lives for more than 50 years. During this time, they also developed 70 acres into a thriving stud farm, Markwood Lodge, before moving on to St Andrews.
Their son Mark (pictured middle) attended Southwell in the 1960s and this was the start of a long association with the school. Mark thrived at Southwell and was a competitive swimmer, representing both the School and Waikato. Rita and Ken got a great deal of pleasure from Mark being at the School, including forging strong friendships with other Southwell families.
Rita and Ken always believed in helping others. Rita is grateful that through Ken’s years of hard work
she has been able to establish this scholarship. A humble lady, Rita is telling her story in the hope that it will
encourage others who have bene ted from an association with Southwell, and who are able to give, to do the same.
What Southwell is today is a testimony to all those who have contributed to its story. From the Sergels with their generous gifting of the School, to people like Rita and Ken with their philanthropic values, whose gift of education will touch generations to come.
Rita will now be able to see the bene t, happiness and pleasure her donation brings. She feels she has been truly blessed. Thank you Rita, for your support and generosity.
