THE END OF AN ERA MFAREWELL MAUREEN BARRETT
aureen Barrett rst joined Southwell’s kitchen staff in 1985, when she was employed by Mrs Roberts as part of
the weekend team. Moss Marshall was Headmaster and John Otley was the Boarding House Master.
During her time at Southwell Maureen, who arrives at school close to an hour before she is due to start, has not
only helped feed hungry, homesick boarders, she has stacked wood, cleaned spouting (before the days of OSH!) washed muddy rugby shirts and mastered the water blaster.
Over the years Maureen has seen many changes in the dining room. In the early days, no one had heard of a dietician, or needed one. The current menu is ‘posh’ according to Maureen and it would amaze past boarders. Gone are the days of repetitive stews, mince, sausages and porridge, though the traditional roast meal is still a rm favourite with current boarders.
Maureen is looking forward to returning ‘home’ to Taranaki where she was bought up and has a large family base. She will be joining her son Craig and his family, and is excited to be able to spend time with her granddaughters.
