 IN MEMORIAM
 KENNE TH HOLMES
en became a Southwell parent in 1964 when his son Foundation was being formed, and Ken put his hand up Glenn began as a boarder, followed two years later to help. He then nominated son Glenn to the Foundation by his younger son Robert; this was the beginning of Board along with a bequest pledge to the new entity.
a 56 year long relationship with Southwell School.
In 1967 a fund-raising committee was formed by the Trust Board to raise money to build the School Hall (it is now part of the PAC). Ken as father of the Head Prefect felt strongly that he should volunteer his assistance. He was appointed Chairman of the “Fathers Division” of the fund-raising committee and his job was to co-ordinate and action fund-raising, particularly in the rural areas where boarder parents resided.
In 1968 he was invited to join the Southwell Trust Board which he served for 9 years, long after his two sons, Glenn and Rob, had moved on. After his retirement from the Trust Board he was invited to become a Fellow. It is probable that he was nominated by Canon Paul Sergel, as they had become close friends.
Ken loved the school, not only for what it had given his two sons, but also what it stood for. Its independent status, along with the teaching of academic, arts, sport, and religious values, all made it a place he thought very highly of.
Ken was delighted when Glenn’s son Alastair became a pupil in 1991. At that time, the Southwell School
Grandson David soon followed, and Ken had the pleasure of seeing two grandsons become Head Choristers, Heads of Lincoln House, and Alastair Head Prefect, as their father had done. Ken was particularly proud of the fact that Southwell gave the opportunity for his sons and grandsons to broaden their learning in all things.
We at Southwell always enjoyed Ken’s visits, be it at Founders Day, Fellows morning teas, the Opera and fundraising events. He entertained us with his stories, memories of Southwell and his humour. Ken was a true Southwell gentleman and a magnificent example of how to support a place you love. Sadly, Ken passed away on 6 May 2020, he will be missed by us all. Ken was a proud Southwell Fellow.
