LARA PYVES
Where are you from? My hometown is Colwyn Bay, near Llandudno Wales (which is pronounced ll- an- did-no (the ll sounds a bit like shhh but is made by pushing air between the sides of your tongue and the roof of your mouth!) 20,800 population.
Did you ever think you’d end up in NZ? New Zealand is a place I’ve always felt a longing for. In Welsh, we have a word ‘hiraeth’ it means longing but specifically for home. I’ve felt that for NZ my whole life.
What have you found good, bad, weird about NZ so far?
New Zealand is so much fun! I LOVE the no shoes thing, its such a culture shock. I remember being GOBSMACKED that someone went to the SUPERMARKET with bare feet!
I absolutely love it now, it makes life so much easier! Another thing I love about NZ is the weather, it’s so warm here! I’m also finding it hard to adjust to the sheer lack of hustle culture here. Also why does mail take so longggggg!. New Zealand’s bugs! Why are they all so huge? Other than that though, it’s been a dream.
Would you wear an All Blacks jersey at a Wales v All Blacks rugby game? YES ABSOLUTELY! Although I lived in Wales, my family and I are from England so I side with them on that rivalry! So yes, I would absolutely wear an All Blacks Jersey... that’s something I would love to do while I’m here too! Sports-wise, I’m very into it. Hockey is my main passion though.
JETHRO HEASLEY
Where are you from? I’m from South Africa and my hometown is a place called Gqeberha. Better known as Port Elizabeth; the windy city.
What landed you here at Southwell? After finishing school last year I was exploring GAP opportunities in places like Australia, Thailand, England and of course, New Zealand. I chose NZ since I’d spent 4 years here at a very early age, this gave me options on where I could apply and I chose Southwell in the North Island due to a better climate and I preferred to work at a Primary School.
Impressions of Hamilton so far? I have found the people here to be really friendly. The price of things is crazy and the weather is really weird, especially how quickly it can change!
My favourite food here so far: has got to be the Fried Chicken Glazed Doughnut burger I found at a place in Auckland. To be honest.. yes, the locals are definitely crazy drivers!
My best experience so far has to be the shopping in Auckland. Especially at the Op Shops, you can get some crazy deals.
Would you wear an All Blacks jersey at a Wales v All Blacks rugby game? I would only wear an All Blacks Jersey if someone else paid for it and only if they were not playing against South Africa.
