CRICKET
2018 has seen an increase in participation and it has been a year in which the game of cricket has greatly developed at Southwell. Competition for the top team has been healthy and we have reinstated the baggies. After a series of trials at the beginning of the year, a squad was named which formed the 1st and 2nd XI teams. With two practices a week the decision was made to take on a collaborative approach once a week. This meant that for the senior teams, we broke off into smaller groups and completed a number of rotations during the session. The second training in the week was reserved for individual teams. The result of this format allowed players of different levels to develop and demonstrate their skills on a regular basis with different coaches. In the fourth term, an opportunity was given to some Year 6 students to join in with the 1st and 2nd squads, once a week.
For the 1st team, there have been a number of moments to remember this year from both Saturday and xture matches. Of particular note was Angus Reeves scoring 100 off
102 balls (not out) having batted an entire innings against Saint Kentigern Boys’ School. Baggies were awarded to James Thomas (Captain), Angus Reeves, William Jacobsen, Oliver Galpin, Will Voigt-Price, Hamish Boyd and Josh Wilson.
The 2nd team have thoroughly enjoyed their year and, under the guidance of Mr Arnall, have won many of their matches. Stand-out performances include Olly Parkinson scoring two half-centuries in Term 4.
The Valley team have worked hard this year, under the watchful eye of Mr Velzian, to develop their game and have particularly enjoyed playing in a prep xture, and winning, against Dilworth School 2nd XI. We also thank Mr Cameron for his effort coaching the Gulley team in Term 1.
The Mustangs, Falcons and Eagles trained with vigour, and with guidance from Mr Williams, Mr Webb, Mr Somers and
Mr Boardman have had some memorable moments over the year.
We would like to express thanks to all the parents who helped out with umpiring, scoring and motivation on the sideline. The enthusiasm and effort on the playing eld, as well as during practices, over the year show that cricket at Southwell is in a great place as we move in to 2019.
