HOCKEY
This year we had 12 teams playing across Years 0-8 which is very encouraging to see from a perspective of developing a love of hockey and being active.
Hockey in 2020 experienced some major change, notwithstanding the disruption caused by Covid-19. Waikato Hockey implemented a 6-a-side competition for all Intermediate grades in an effort to increase the development of all players involved in the game. Different grades were also introduced with teams able to play in grades with or without a goalkeeper. What players experienced was a faster game with more time on the ball for all players. This new format is a success and develops an exciting, action-packed brand of hockey. The players must be congratulated for adapting to the new competition and developing their skills, knowledge and understanding of hockey.
Waikato Hockey also made the decision to run each grade without the traditional competition format of semi-nals, nals and
an eventual winner. Once again our players adjusted to the change and enjoyed each game for what it was. Several teams went through the season unbeaten and there were many compliments from supporters and opposition coaches around the quality of play and manner in which each game was played.
The inter-school Prep calendar was impacted due to the global pandemic and we were only able to play two matches. Fortunately, we managed to retain our overnight xture against Huntley School, Marton. It was a pleasure to take two teams away and observe their sportsmanship and camaraderie. Two students even managed to watch a calf being born during their farm stay with their billets!
Our thanks must go to the coaches, parent supporters, umpires and players for their commitment, encouragement and enthusiasm over the season.
