 SOFTBALL
Softball started in 2020 with a hiss and a roar, with the Southwell Saints coming second in the nal standings for the Waikato 2019/20 Intermediate season. This was a fabulous achievement and a testament to the great attitude and skills that the seven returning players brought with them, alongside the quick uptake of the new team members, who joined the team at the start of the year.
The enthusiasm and commitment by everyone in the team was wonderful to see, and excellent skill development was a testament to this. Many of the team have tried new positions and shown exibility and resilience during this year's disruption by the Covid-19 pandemic.
A number of keen players in the team spent a good amount of time at home honing their skills during Lockdown and returned to the start of the 2020/21 season in Term 4 with a ourish.
We were fortunate to play three xtures during this challenging year - one against St Kentigern at home, and then two away against Dilworth and King's. While these games were tough, with results not going our way, the players learned a lot from the experiences and, as always, enjoyed the days immensely.

   EQUESTRIAN
The 2020 Southwell Equestrian Team consisted of Taylor Clarke, Mya Kovaleski, Lily Goodwin, Klaudia Horsfall and Josh Cashin.
Covid-19 restrictions took a rather heavy toll on our ability to eld teams. New commitments created challenges, meaning some students were unable to ride when the inter-school competitions were nally able to commence. Although we started off our season with ve keen riders, we were unfortunately only able to eld a team of three for the nal day of the inter-school Show Jumping series.
Our team for the day was Taylor Clarke, Lily Goodwin, and Klaudia Horsfall. All three riders were with new mounts and still forming their partnerships. We also included a draft rider – Jess Brunton from Te Kura, who completed our team.
Our rule for the day was for each rider to nish with a smile, as it’s not always easy to ensure that horse and rider are a cohesive team, especially when they are still working each other out! Klaudia was our only rider to gain a placing. Well done to her. However, each combination improved as the day proceeded, so I look forward to seeing them out on the circuit for the rest of this season.
This was the last Southwell Equestrian Team ride for Taylor. She has enjoyed several successful years within the equestrian team (and I’ve enjoyed supporting them.) It was also the last opportunity for Mya to ride for Southwell. Good luck to both for future riding endeavours.
