The lyrics of Pepeha, a waiata from the Senior Kapa Haka bracket, accurately summed kapa haka in 2021. Pride, love and family were important themes in growing the Kapa Haka movement here at Southwell School. A record number of students and teachers were involved in the Kapa Haka whanau this year.
The Year 2-6 Junior Kapa Haka group met on Monday lunchtimes with the support of Matua, Mrs Milroy and Whaea Whetu. In Terms 1 and 2, we learnt a short bracket to perform at the Matariki Assembly. We performed the Southwell School Haka Te Puna Tapu for the first time, and were accompanied by the String Orchestra in a classic lullaby Hine e Hine. Shout out to Mrs Trenwith and the String Orchestra for the collaboration. In Term 3, Whaea Whetu began teaching the Lord's Prayer in Te Reo, which we look to include in our school Chapel services. Well done to all students and staff involved in the Junior Kapa Haka. Tau kē koutou! You rock!
The Year 6-8 Kapa Haka group were once again high in numbers and energy this year. Once again Covid-19 cut short opportunities to practise and perform, but the students made the most of the time they had together to embrace and strengthen tikanga Maori within the community. One highlight this year was performing the entire bracket at Southwell’s first ever Matariki Concert for students, staff and parents. The other highlight was performing at Te Awa, The Base, also as part of Matariki celebrations. Bringing hundreds of shoppers to a standstill, followed by big cheers, with our Toia Mai waiata and haka was a huge buzz that we will never forget. We look forward to the continued growth of the group in 2022 and hopefully many more opportunities to showcase our talents and culture.
Ngā mihi nui,
Matua Arama Pou & Elliot Tiffany Junior Kapa Haka & Senior Kapa Haka
