INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
This year has been crazy, but the Symphony Orchestra has come out on top. We have all enjoyed making wonderful music together and learning more about each other through music. I have had the honour to lead the Symphony Orchestra and it has been a pleasure.
The Symphony Orchestra is a highly skilled group of musicians, with a range of diverse instruments and is one of the senior music groups. We range from Year 5-8, we are auditioned and we meet with each other to practise every Wednesday morning.
Due to Covid-19 many of our performances were cancelled but we learnt a range of pieces. From Capriccio Espagnol, to highlights from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, snippets from the musical The Pirates of Penzance, and finally to Go West! (a remarkable arrangement of western music featuring pieces like The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly).
As well as getting to play at Grandparents' Day, this year was the 100 Years Of Opera anniversary, and we played some of the overture from The Pirates of Penzance, and highlights from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat with the choirs. It was absolutely phenomenal!!
Thank you to Mr Rees-Gibbs and Mr Trenwith and a huge thank you to Mrs Trenwith. You are an amazing conductor, and you have an incredible sense of humour! I know I have enjoyed our group discussions. I have had a fabulous year in the Symphony Orchestra and I am sure everyone else has too. I can’t wait to hear what you play next.

Being in the Jazz Band for multiple years, both of us know what a privilege it is to be a part of. As the only two students who carried on from last year, we were wondering what was going to happen, but when the Jazz Band came together it was awesome. With 14 new talented students joining, a whole new band was created with three trumpets, four trombones, two saxophones, two clarinets, the rhythm section, drums, keyboard, bass, guitar and piano, our two wonderful singers and of course our amazing conductor.
Every week we had the opportunity to play and hear the music coming together and being perfected. Our set included a range of music, from the 1940s hit In The Mood, to Bruno Mars’ Uptown Funk. All of our musicians worked super hard to put everything together and make us sound amazing.
This year was a hard year for the Jazz Band. With Covid-19 seeing concerts getting cancelled it wasn’t the usual year for us. But luckily we had an amazing time playing in the 100 Years of Opera concert, performing Someone to Watch Over Me which we played very well. We made it work and still did our best to make Mrs Trenwith proud.
Mrs Trenwith makes us want to do our very best. Her passion for all things music is contagious and that is what pushes us to make our music some- thing she can be proud of. We can’t help but feed off her energy, and her motivation makes the band what it is today. Thank you Mrs Trenwith.
Overall, even with Covid-19 restricting us, it has been an amazing year and we hope that everyone feels the same. As Year 8s, we have made so many friends and memories. This experience has made our last year at Southwell so enjoyable and we will cherish it for many years to come.
