LIBRARY
The Library has been a buzzing place to be again in 2021.
We pride ourselves on providing a safe space for our students to hang out in in their spare time, whilst at the same time creating a place for them to discover new worlds in a book and also discover new learning.
Highlight this year have been:
• embarking on a trial with our Year 7 students and teachers, collaborating together around the teaching of inquiry.
• weekly visits from the cuties from Little Sparrows.
• adapting the way Year 8 Librarians were chosen, as part of a school-wide initiative to give all Year 8 students an opportunity to lead.
• appointing joint Head Librarians Cassie Pilling and Hayley Penn and seeing them absolutely shine in their roles.
• developing ALL the Librarians as we encouraged them to take responsibility for their role.
• Book Week, including a visit from legendary kiwi author, Gavin Bishop; introducing a new feature, Storytime With...; as well as the usual Book Quizzes and Book Character Day.
• welcoming author Bruce Potter, who entertained the Year 3-7 students.
• welcoming author Melinda Szymanik who spent a morning with 7GML.
• welcoming author Karen McMillan who spent some time with 3LSy.
• collaborating with other local librarians as part of a COL and also as part of Libraries Alive.
• although the SLANZA Conference in Wellington was cancelled they still provided some excellent online PD.
• annual stocktake - it is such a cleansing experience!
• book buying... it is a privilege to be able to source amazing books for our students!
• collaborating with our teachers.
• chatting with prospective students as they tour through the Library with Mrs
Speedy.
• seeing students (and staff) develop a
love of reading.
• Kids Lit Quiz is always a highlight as Mrs
Huggins whips her literary teams into shape! Sadly, 2021 will be her swansong as she steps aside from coaching our teams in preparation for her new role as New Zealand Quizmaster in 2024. She has been an inspiration as the Southwell coach and KLQ will never quite be the same again! But we do look forward to seeing her make the Quizmaster role her own!
