HOCKEY
Hockey continues to be a popular winter sport option at Southwell, with 13 teams of keen players from Years 1 to Year 8. The goal is always to improve and become better hockey players through regular practice and supportive coaching.
The local Waikato Hockey competition continued to embark on a developmental approach to the sport at this age and all players appreciated the chance to showcase their talents, learn new skills and compete on a week to week basis against some strong local teams. Southwell has embraced the recent changes to the 6-a-side competition and we all enjoy the pace of the game and the chance to have more involvement in the action. With a focus on quick passing and maximising the space available, teams are playing quality hockey.
It was with great delight that we managed to complete the majority of our inter-school prep matches without interruption this year, with just the final game against Huntley School affected by the Covid-19 lockdown. The highlight for many of the players was the away trip, which this year was down to the beautiful Hawkes Bay to play a double-header against Iona College and Hereworth School. Southwell represented themselves with pride, both on the field and off, with compliments from the opposition about their determined play and their wonderful manners. That is what sport is all about!
As always we are grateful to the coaches, parent supporters, umpires and players for providing the opportunities to be active and be involved in a great sport.
