                ALL HALLOWS
    ALL HALLOWS CHAPEL
All Hallows Chapel is the driving force behind what the purpose is of Christian schooling at Southwell, notably the educational and spiritual development of each child. It stands as the gathering place where people of all faiths may enter and enjoy a time of worship, reflection and sense of community that is essentially timeless.
Spiritual formation is a vital component of a Christian school education. Students are taught that humankind is made in the image of God. God wishes for us to be fulfilled in life and work, in relationship with him, with each other, and with the world he made for us to enjoy. The Chapel and Scho ol aim to prepare students to live full, productive and purposeful lives, contributing to the well-being of their families, communities and as global citizens.
The mission of Southwell is the spiritual, educational, emotional, social and physical development of every child. Every student is made in the image of God. Therefore, the unique needs of every child are the primary concern of this School, as it has been for the past 111 years.
It was an interesting experience to worship outdoors for Term 1 this year. We could see the Chapel but not be in the Chapel. This did not deter us from our worship life, although a few cold bottoms were experienced as the term progressed toward Autumn! However, it was wonderful to be back from Term 2 and to enjoy all aspects of our special place.
The greatest highlight of this year has been the installation of the Foundation Window – a marvellous gift from so many who love All Hallows with a real passion. The window had its origins in a basic concept drawing put together by myself and Art teacher, Mrs Wing. After much reshaping, the final window has been a stunning addition to the Year 8 transept from which rainbow colours are reflected onto the grey brick and the whole image moves and reforms throughout the days, months and seasons according to the position of the sun. The imagery within the window is deliberately Southern Hemisphere in content and does, therefore, allow the students to connect with the familiar. It is a sign that we have moved away somewhat from western European imagery and embraced what makes us distinctly Aotearoa / New Zealand.
This year’s Sacristans, Jasmine Miller and Jasper Goldsmith, have gently guided the Chapel Party back into the roles normally carried out by this dedicated team.
The installation of a Rodger’s Organ has ensured a strong accompaniment for our choral tradition well into the future.
My Assistant, Reverend Matt Pickering, was priested within All Hallows this year and he continues to make a very positive contribution to all aspects of Chapel and classroom life. I thank him for this, as I also do Mrs Julia McIntyre for her care of the large Chapel Choirs and the pleasure their singing brings to the place.
The sacramental life of the School continues in a positive manner with weddings, funerals and baptisms being at its core. It is a pleasure to note that there were over 50 baptisms in one service mid-year - something that may not be seen again for quite some time!
Grace and Peace to You from God.
