HOCKEY
Hockey gives students the opportunity to develop fine motor skills, fitness and a love of competition. This year over 100 students, from Years 1-8, chose hockey as their winter sport option.
The Waikato Hockey competition proved once again that developing players’ skills was first and foremost in mind when it comes to the intermediate competition, with the 6-a-side format emerging in most regions of New Zealand. Southwell entered the most teams in the Waikato Competitive Grade, with three even teams, and we entered two teams in the Development Grade.
Once again the highlight of the season was the away trip to Huntley School in Marton. Vast kilometres mean nothing when there is the promise of a game to test ourselves and undertake the unique experience that billeting brings. Unfamiliar homes, shared meals, common goals all come together for sport.
The morning of the game always brings such expressive tales of what the students experienced overnight and what magnificent hosts they had.
The game itself was one of the most exciting end-to-end battles Southwell has had over the years. The final score
of 0-0 did nothing to reflect the energy, commitment and passion seen on the field. This is the first occasion that Southwell has been held to a scoreless draw in the last 20 years.
Coaches, umpires, parents and players form the vital components of sport here at Southwell and we are forever grateful for the time and commitment of everyone involved.
