TOUCH
Southwell Touch numbers have continued to grow, with a total of nine teams taking to the field in the 2022 season.
Mrs Filipo’s Year 1/2 Southwell Speedy team and Mr Potter’s Year 3/4 Hot Steppers team were quick to learn the basics and played some exciting styles of touch that impressed the crowds on game day.
Year 5/6 Mars and Saturn teams, coached by Mr Trowbridge and Mr & Mrs Deane, showed some true potential and ensured there were some solid touch players coming through into the seniors for next year.
The Term 4 Touch season saw our biggest number of Year 7/8 touch players to date. The high calibre of players saw Southwell enter a 1st Boys' team, the Suns, coached by Mr Tiffany, and a 1st Girls' team, the Stars, coached by Mr Mills, into the local Swarbrick competition. Alongside these teams, were three well-skilled and drilled mixed teams, Jupiter, Venus and Neptune, coached by Mr Velzian, Mrs van Heuven, Mr Luxton and Mr Whytock.
The season ended with several teams making play-offs, the highlight being the
Girls' 1st VI winning the Mixed
Grade, the first time a Southwell
Girls' team has ever achieved this!
The Term 1 fixture season was cut short with all external fixtures cancelled due to Covid restrictions. However, two very unique Southwell vs Southwell fixtures were created where the intensity, pride and competitiveness of a fixture were still present. Results were close, mixed and varied which provided Southwell a good platform for future fixtures.
Term 4 saw Southwell’s only Touch fixture against King's Prep from Auckland, involving our 1st Boys' and 1st Girls' teams. The fixture was a huge success with Southwell notching up their first ever win over King's thanks to a combined boys' and girls' first team.
