CRICKET
2022 started with a great deal of promise and growth, with six Year 7 & 8 teams, three Year 5 & 6 teams and to top that two girls' teams. It was fantastic to see a Staff vs Students game played near the end of Term 1 as a showcase of the Cricket P.E. programme as well.
We were fortunate enough to play two altered fixtures between two mixed Southwell teams. Players from these teams would have made up our 1st XI and 2nd XI but unfortunately due to Covid restrictions we were unable to have fixtures against our usual opposition. Highlights in these games included a number of 50s, joined with a few Baggie Hat presentations. Congratulations to Ollie Penfold, Maclaren Maber, Jack Sandy and Quinn Hadley.
In Term 4 the boys were able to play in a fixture against King's Prep School. The games were played in great spirit and were very competitive. There was a final opportunity to award a Baggie as well. Congratulations to Caleb De Bruin.
Our Tuesday development sessions working with different coaches brought enjoyment and gave the opportunity for players from different ability levels to learn from and help each other as well. Thursdays there were team training sessions across the year levels.
From Miss Ross, Mrs Milroy and Mr McKay:
The girls have been a pleasure to work with and have had a lot of fun along the way. We had three teams entered in the weekly Girls' Hardball competition. Their development has been outstanding to see. It was fantastic to be able to select a girls' team for a fixture this year and we also had a group attending the Hawkes Bay Cricket Tournament in January. We continue to see growth within our programme and look forward to continuing momentum in 2023.
The coaching staff have commented multiple times on the development of skills throughout the season and continue to see love for the game among the children. I would like to acknowledge the time spent and efforts made by our coaching team, along with many other parents managing teams and helping out with scoring and umpiring.
Good luck to the players going to high school, and to the players returning. I look forward to seeing you back next year.
