Anzac Day 2018 was commemorated early in Term 2, after the students
had returned from their holidays. The students reflected on the lives of those who served, and those who served and fell from the Southwell School community. Over 200 old boys and several teachers served in the armed forces overseas.
In 1952 a Roll of Honour was presented to the Chapel by the families of those old boys named on the roll. It is draped by the New Zealand flag. This particular flag was owned by Reverend Paul Sergel, a former Southwell Chaplain and Headmaster. This flag accompanied him on his service journey in the Second World War, including Africa, Palestine and Italy.
An ANZAC Poem: I’m Alexander Aitkin
Fear and excitement shoot through my bones,
As shrapnel fires and gunfire drones.
I step off from the landing boat,
I feel so glad for the warmth of my coat.
But, as my eyes fall on the sight, My feelings turn from excitement to fright.
Dead bodies littered on the shore,
I see that life in many,
Is no more.
As Ottoman’s carelessly shoot from above,
Their bullets fly high, just like a dove. The sea is stained a crimson red, like that of a poppy,
On a brown dirt bed.
Then I see the reason why,
The blood of those who have
Been shot and died.
Screaming men fall like autumn leaves, I think of their poor families, left to grieve.
People shouting, shooting, yelling, Not many escaping from the horrific shelling.
But I’m fighting for my freedom,
Here I’ll stand, tall and proud,
I’m “Alexander Aitken” hear me shout, I’m Alexander Aitken, tall and proud. ‘Alexander Aitken’
