SOUTHWELL MEMORIES
I was a boarder at Southwell for Year 7 and 8 (2004-05)
and LOVED my time there. Coming from a great little country school in Hinuera to Southwell was a big change, but my older brothers, Richard and Andrew, and other family friends had been, so I was excited to follow in their footsteps (My younger brother, Tom, also attended later). I made some wonderful friends at Southwell, who are still some of my closest friends today. It’s amazing how time has flown, we all catch up often and are now starting to attend each other’s weddings! Some of the best memories of my time at Southwell are; Art with Mrs Knighton, we still have so much Southwell art and pottery around home signed off with Mrs Knighton’s iconic handwriting, softball with the Cravens, and of course the happy memories with Miss McMaster and the girls in the boarding house.
LIFE AFTER SOUTHWELL
After Southwell, I attended Waikato Diocesan and continued to love school, especially the big group of girls that went there alongside me. At Dio I became more interested in the Arts, especially painting and photography and my senior years were often just spent in the art department.
Following Dio I decided (for some reason - I’m not sure!) to embark on a Commerce Degree. I moved to Christchurch and studied at The University of Canterbury. Within a week of Uni life, we were struck with the devastating February earthquake, which then decided my move to The University of Adelaide for a semester to continue my degree. As much as I loved Uni, I quickly realised Commerce wasn’t for me, and changed to a Bachelor of Fine Arts. I was at Uni for five years in Christchurch and loved every minute. I enjoyed being creative and learnt so much while also making some of the most amazing memories and friends along the way.
Since graduating at the end of 2015 with a Bachelor of
Fine Arts, I have been based predominantly in the Waikato working for myself running a number of small businesses. The Rocks, started in 2017, has been one of my biggest adventures yet. We built a house, that sits on my parent’s dairy farm, under the spectacular Hinuera cliffs, which I designed with the idea of renting as a bnb. I do all the cleaning, cooking, marketing and running of The Rocks with huge help from Mum. We have created a beautiful spot for bridal parties, groups of friends, couples and families to enjoy and it is something that I am very proud of. Because of the flexibility with The Rocks, I am lucky to be able to enjoy other creative work. I have produced a series of floral prints that have been a real hobby over the last few years, and have also established what is becoming a busy cake making business, Flour Cakery, creating bespoke cakes for all occasions.
Although this work keeps me busy and can be challenging,
I really enjoy the freedom it gives me, how much I have learnt along the way and the fact that what I create, whether it be with The Rocks, my art or cakes, is enjoyed by many!
