TRUST BOARD CHAIRMAN’S ADDRESS
Thank you for the opportunity to address you all today at the culmination of a very busy, positive and extremely successful year for Southwell School.
Congratulations to all of the prize winners, You all deserve this recognition for your hard work, goal setting, commitment and excellence.
However, I would also like to recognise those of you who missed out on a prize this year. We appreciate that many of you worked equally as hard and put
in maximum effort to meet, and often exceed, your own goals and expectations. So, ell done and congratulations too.
With enthusiasm, I can re ect on
2018 being a year of solid growth and measurable progress. Southwell has such amazing traditions, great bones, strong values and a culture of success. However, this history and past performance is not suf cient to cement our positive future. But this, combined with a strong strategic plan, a clear vision and accountability does ensure a bright future. During this past year, I am pleased to reference that we have capitalised on a strong plan and have achieved many great results.
The children here get to experience small wins every day in their learning and varied opportunities. Equally, the school and its community has got to enjoy large campus developments, new curriculum variations and staff progressions.
The Murray and Ann Day Building was of cially opened in April this year with
an outstanding function. The centre
has exceeded our high expectations for being a top-end, functional and enjoyable learning space. Its exible spaces are being utilised broadly and our kids are
thriving in its light, airy and comfortable rooms. The building is an absolute asset to our campus, our staff and children and will continue to assist in delivering great results for many years.
It is very tting that this building was
named after Murray and Ann Day. They both epitomise a lifetime of commitment, passion and belief in Southwell School and we are very appreciative.
We have again experienced tremendous support from our parent body, the SSA, with a phenomenal number of parents assisting in the classroom and with the extra-curricular programme. They also donated the new playground at the northern end of the Murray and Ann Day building.
This year the Old Boys’ and Girls’ Association have supported new ags for the Great Hall, another round of Year 8 leavers’ ties and scarves and created several, well-supported social occasions.
And thank you to the Southwell Foundation. Their newly invigorated vision and passion
to continually enhance Southwell is hugely appreciated. They have also funded the opportunity for our staff to participate in a professional learning exchange with Punahou School in Hawaii. All this while continuing to build our scholarship and endowment funds. Thank you very much.
The starting roll for the New Year of 2019
is the highest ever in the school’s history. Although, as it always has been, our goal is not to be bigger but to be better. We pride ourselves on personalised education, with smaller class sizes, thus enabling our staff to deliver quality over quantity and to enhance what we have. Our stable staf ng allows
us to grow these committed individuals
and further enhance their skill sets which ultimately bene ts our students. With respect to these deliverables, I wish to thank all the staff. Thank you for your hard work,
The following students have achieved over 50 points:
•Sophia Scaramuzza
•William Mollard
•Kristian Tiffany
•Sadie Williams
•Rachel Koshy
•Ellena Wood
•Matthew Chanwai (98 points)
We do have a very balanced, all-round learning curriculum at Southwell, involving academic, cultural, sport, spiritual, social, service and other opportunties.
These successes are well-deserved, but more important is your own personal self- development. Leading yourself with good values and creating positive relationships with others is number one.
Success is giving your best.
2018 has been a great Southwell year. Per aspera ad Astrum
