It has to be said that for the bulk of 2020, many events in Chapel, and indeed the wider School, have been skewed by Covid-19. For instance, in terms of family services, only one (Evensong in Term 3) was held. Oddly though, worship opportunities continued almost unabated throughout lockdown or alert level restrictions. This was made possible through 21st century technologies whereby students could participate in daily services from my place to theirs. Our Shih Tzu puppy, Toby, enjoyed a starring role from time to time too! However, as the old saying goes, “there’s no place like home” and that included our spiritual home, All Hallows Chapel. It was fantastic to eventually gather there in full heart and voice with a heightened sense of appreciation for all that building stands for in this community.
The Boys’ and Girls’ Choirs of All Hallows have had fewer choral commitments this year but are always in ne voice irrespective of how often they sing. They did manage to head off for an annual choir trip that included joining in the Eucharist at St Peter’s Cathedral and leading the 1662 Choral Evensong in St Bride’s Anglican Church, Otorohanga, plus many fun activities along the way. A big thank you must go to our Director of Music, Mrs Julia McIntyre, for giving our choirs a ne choral repertoire to use and an opportunity to relax and enjoy the company of this special team.
The Chapel Party has proven to be most reliable this year, under the leadership of Sacristans Imbi Crossland and Daniel Zhang. The 18 other members of this team also supported me well and possessed a ne work ethic in the Chapel as they shared a common determination to make All Hallows Chapel the best worship space, in spite of interruptions.
It was a joy to again have been selected by the Anglican Schools’ Ofce to receive the third of the three annual Chaplaincy Internships to spend Term 4 with us in the person of Mr Matt Pickering. Similarly, last year we hosted the Reverend Blythe Cody as she too explored whether the role of a School Chaplain was for her. The strong bond between Southwell and the Anglican Schools’ Ofce is an important one, as this agency works hard to resource this, and other schools, to promote the delivery of Christian values to our students.
In two years' time All Hallows Chapel will be celebrating the centenary of the laying of the foundation stone. The Chapel has survived many testing times in its long history but remains forever a constant reminder of God’s daily goodness to the Southwell community. And for this, we are exceedingly grateful.
