 RUGBY
Grit, pride, and determination. This was the mantra for many of our rugby teams this year including the 1st XV. Although the season was short compared to other years, everyone was grateful that they were able to play for Southwell and wear the ne blue, black and white colours of the school. We had 93 students playing rugby, including 25 girls. We managed to squeeze a couple of much-loved traditional xtures in, with the highlight being the overnight trip to Huntley School in Marton. This was a close battle, but the Southwell 1st XV courageously managed to come out on top, after defending their line strongly. The 2nd XV also won the curtain-raiser.
Once again there was a wide range of rugby players through the grades this year. The 5 & 6 year olds in the Rippa rugby team were a crowd favourite with their length of the eld tries and new found love for the game. The 10th and 11th Grade teams had outstanding seasons with a 90% win rate and a 100%
enjoyment rating. Southwell’s two 12th grade teams did extremely well in very competitive grades. 12th Grade Blue were unbeaten in their competition and 12th Grade White competed strongly in their pool. Several Southwell boys also starred for Marist 13th Grade, who narrowly missed winning their championship this year.
rugby. They also had time to learn about the ner skills in certain positions, as well as nd out what nutrition is important for rugby players. A special thanks to Paul Martin and Jordan Farrington from the WRU for supporting us with this.
We really appreciated seeing all players develop over the season. They have all done extremely well and we know Southwell rugby is in a really positive position for 2021 and beyond. A very special thanks to all the parent volunteers for 2020. We had a number of parents who helped with coaching, managing and even supplying labelled water bottles for some teams! Without your valued support we would not be able to eld teams and be competitive.
We look forward to your continued support in 2021.

1st XV Rugby Coach
When asked what they enjoyed about playing for the school this year, students across all teams mentioned the following:
• I loved playing with my friends.
• I liked to train at school and couldn’t wait for our Saturday games.
• I especially enjoyed playing in the xture against Huntley School and doing the Haka. • I liked learning new things from my coaches.
To start the season for the 1st and 2nd XV teams a one-day training camp was organised and the players had an opportunity to learn more about the importance of Southwell
