YEAR 8 CAMP : PUSHING THE LIMITS IN TURANGI
TONGARIRO CROSSING
Marching together determinedly, tawny tussocks surrounding,
Admiring the volcanic landscape, it really was astounding!
We have finished the first part, Mangatepopo Valley, Now, it’s the Devil’s Staircase, no time to dally! The scorching sun making rivulets of sweat run down my face
Parents usher on to quicken the pace. Stairs are continuous and endless.
Kids in front make it look effortless. Finally, it’s finished and I breath a sigh of relief The landscape changes so quickly that I’m in disbelief!
A flat volcanic basin, it gives me no grief. Then, grabbing at rocks, a steep, craggy incline Suddenly, we’re on the summit and the view is divine!
On the left is Mount Doom and a crimson crater.
I look down at the rocky slope,
We link arms and I’m thinking, “Nope!” Sliding down the treacherous scree,
Lots of people got skinned knees
Down at the bottom, the vibrant Emerald Lake. Didn’t get the grit out of my boots, that was a mistake!
Keep on walking, kids start to tire,
As we walk past the Sapphire Lake, the incline gets higher.
I admire the flowers, orchids, buttercup and mountain daisy,
The air is so hot, everything looks hazy. We take a look at the Central Plateau
It’s so breathtaking, everybody goes “Woah...!”
Back on the track, we enter the woods. Now it is shady, it feels so good! Massive trees tower above us,
All I’m thinking is, "Where’s the bus?"
Then finally, finally!
The glorious bus is in view!
I run to the end, sit down and snooze!
Then we pile onto the bus and take off our shoes, In that enclosed space, it smelled pee-yew!
I loved every minute of it.
But it takes a lot of grit.
The scenery was worth the pain in my feet. When we get back to camp, I’m going to sleep.
