Being the Head Chorister of the Boys' Choir of All Hallows’ Chapel has been a huge honor.
The Boys' Choir has certainly had its challenges due to Covid-19 this year. From endless lockdowns to cancelled events like The Kids Sing, this year has been tough for both choirs. But despite this, we have pushed through, and made the best out of an unfamiliar situation.
One of our highlights of the year was the Choir Trip, which we were lucky to have. I think I speak for all the boys when I say that we loved every second of it. Having that balance of work and fun made the trip memorable for everyone involved, and especially to the Year 8s, as it was their last. Thank you especially to all the parents and helpers who came on the trip, all your work was much appreciated.
We didn’t get to sing at many services this year, but our rehearsals every Monday and Thursday morning were a huge highlight. The perfect mix of fun and hard work really made this one of the best years of rehearsals ever, with some of the songs we sang becoming favourites! I could just feel the excitement in the room as we sang Kusimama or Go Down, Moses. Mrs McIntyre certainly picked great songs for an energetic choir.
We did still get to sing at Grandparents' Day, a few school services (including Baptism and Evensong) and we also got to sing at the Cathedral. A highlight performance would have to have been at the special Performing Arts Concert which celebrated 100 Operas at Southwell. The choirs got to sing a huge Fiddler on the Roof medley and Mrs Walker taught us some actions. We also got to sing songs from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat with the school Symphony Orchestra.
This year is my last at Southwell, and though I may be sad about leaving, I have created many lifelong memories here, especially at choir. It’s certainly been a crazy year for both the choirs, but we have pushed through the challenges.
To finish up, I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped the choir. From the mums who robed us, to the parents who helped on the choir trip, everything has been greatly appreciated.
Thank you also to Mrs Trenwith, Mrs Walker and Mrs Smith & Eon Malon (our accompanists) for being there at every service. And lastly, I want to thank Mrs McIntyre, for without her the choirs would not exist. She puts up with our constant chatter, and frankly, I don’t know how she does it! The choir is nothing without you Mrs McIntyre, and I have enjoyed every moment of my time with you at Southwell. If I could do it all over again, I would.
