Southwell Chess Club had an amazing year, with the highest number of students participating. They join us every week, practicing, learning and playing their best games with friends.
By the end of Term 1 we were able to pick our top chess students to represent Southwell at competitions. Our teams of rookies, juniors and seniors have done exceptionally well throughout the year, winning all the challenges at regional level.
The first competition of the year was the Power Chess Waikato Regional Championship, where our teams were tough competition for the other teams from all around the Waikato and they successfully placed first in both the junior and intermediate categories. Top team members also secured an invitation to represent Southwell at Nationals happening in December.
Southwell also had a very successful day at the NZ Chess Federation Waikato Regional Championship. Four Southwell teams participated in this competition. In the Primary Division, Southwell Team A won the competition and Southwell Team B came second. It was bitter-sweet as our teams had to play against each other and Southwell Team A stood victorious.
In the Intermediate Division Southwell Team A won the competition. Each team member had to play seven rounds, totalling 28 games. Our students won 27 games out of the 28 they played, and the only game lost was against Southwell Team B. It was a fantastic effort and overall win. All students were outstanding and humble in their victory. Both A teams had the opportunity to represent Southwell and Waikato at National championships in December.
