SOFTBALL
The Southwell Saints started 2021 with a hiss and a roar with a large number of new players joining the team in Term 1, and again in Term 4. Sadly, for the Term 4 group, Covid-19 saw the second half of the year cancelled, but we were grateful to have a full and happy complement of games at the start of the year.
The Term 1 team entered the season in second place in the Waikato Softball Association 2020/21 competition. Our Captain, Ben Foster led the team strongly, with Vice Captain Rhys Lumsden joining him to make a great pair to lead the team. Together they helped create an environment with steady, calm influences, with some great strategic advice thrown in along the way! All of the team took the challenge on, and played some fabulous softball throughout the term to make the end of season play offs - still in second place overall.
team suffer a narrow defeat by only one run. In the playoff for third and fourth, we came home with the hard-fought goods to win by one! All players worked super hard on their basic skills throughout the season which paid dividends in them performing so strongly against club teams with a large number of experienced players in their sides.
Our fixtures this season were against Hereworth and King's. Hereworth proved too strong for us on the day, but much fun was had by all, including having wonderful Hereworth team members billeted in our homes for a night. Another home fixture was against King's – and after some strong play where the basics were again the focus, we came away with a great win over these traditional foes.
Overall, a fabulous amount of play at the ballpark, with a lot of enjoyment for players and parents alike!
