After seven years as House Leader Haydn Stoevelaar stood down and we thank him for his service to the house. Our student Heads of House this year, Tilly Darke and Thomas Luxton, took on many of the responsibilities of running House Meetings. One of the first changes they made was to appoint Deputy House Leaders in the form of Eva Darke and Toby Whytock. With the strange year we have had with illness, weather and other disruptions this has meant that a Year 8 leader has always been present at House Meetings.
Winchester is a real family affair for our leaders. Thomas’ brother is here already and their uncle came about 35 years ago. Tilly
and Eva are cousins and Tilly’s older and younger siblings have attended, or are still at, Southwell. Toby is the only first generation Winchester member in our leadership group.
Our staff leadership model has changed too. Tilly, Thomas, Eva and Toby are unanimous in stating that:
“Having different staff lead different events has meant that we have gotten to know more of the staff,”
and that:
“Staff have different areas of expertise so it has worked well.”
Highlights of the year for staff and students alike were House Singing led by Mrs Donald (second place) and Line Dancing to the choreography of Ms Benseman (we rocked Hey Mickey) and with the confident dance moves of Mr I’Anson.
This year we farewell a legend of Winchester house, Guy Velzian, who has taught Science for over twenty years at Southwell. He was, in fact, involved in the design of the Science laboratories at the outset. He has served many other roles such as House Master in the Boarding House, House Leader of Winchester, as well as coach of athletics, hockey, touch, cricket and football. His many talents will be sorely missed. We wish you well Mr Velzian.
