What a year it has been! Starting with stressless auditions and ending with our final performance at Prize Giving, the year was an absolute rollercoaster, with Mrs Trenwith leading us on yet another ride. Rehearsing every Wednesday morning, the Orchestra is made up of students from Years 5-8 playing a variety of instruments. We played beautiful and vibey music. Our first performance at Grandparents' Day was exciting and fun at the same time, presenting the It’s About Time medley with Cindi Lauper's ever-popular Time After Time. We ignored the fact that at least a thousand eyes were staring at us and played on. There was no time to be nervous!
Next up was the Performing Arts Concert. One highlight was playing Warrior Legacy by Soon-Hee Newbold, as it filled the Auditorium with warrior-like music.
A few months later, the whole orchestra travelled to Te Awamutu to enter the Waikato Band and Orchestra Music Festival. We played our ever-popular two pieces, taking the Gold Award. Still rehearsing every Wednesday morning, we eventually (and sadly) came to the conclusion of the year meaning it was time for our final performance. At Prize Giving, we performed a medley from the film Polar Express giving everyone the Christmas vibe.
Orchestra would never be the same without the crazy Mrs Trenwith, (I mean that with love), popping in the occasional joke or two and taking us on a musical journey. I speak for the whole orchestra when I say WE LOVE YOU. I will never forget the times you sang the
violin and trumpet parts at the same time.
For future reference, I have one message for you. Whenever Mrs Trenwith asks what
instrument is the best, just say the violin. It makes her happy.
(But cellos will always be better. Remember that. It
might come in handy!)

This has been my first year in the Southwell Jazz Band, and it will also be my last. This experience has brought together so many memories, laughter and a sense of achievement. It is greatly appreciated and will be treasured forever.
The Jazz Band this year consists of four alto saxophone players, one tenor sax, two clarinets, three trumpets, four trombones (including Mr Rees-Gibbs and Mr Trenwith), two vocalists, a rhythm section, not to mention our one-of-a-kind conductor, Mrs Trenwith. From the classic Norah Jones Don’t Know Why, to the well-known SkyFall, the Wednesday lunchtimes and Friday mornings have certainly been a highlight, listening to all these pieces come together.
After bringing smiles to people's faces on Grandparents' Day and the outstanding performance at the Performing Arts Concert, the Jazz Band took out gold in the Music Festival held at Te Awamutu this year!
I would like to thank Mrs Trenwith for the effort she has put into every rehearsal to make us sound the best we can be. Your witty sense of humour has always brightened my day. Playing in the Jazz Band this year has been a pleasure. Whether we’re on stage or not, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it and I’m sure everyone else has too.
