One of the amazing musical opportunities available to Southwell students are the Rock Bands. After auditions in Term 1, four bands were formed. They were THE SUPER 6s, THE JABEZIOS, APOLLO 6 and WIRELESS.
The Rock Bands provide an amazing opportunity to learn how to develop musical skills in a band setting, playing a variety of musical genres. This includes developing a band name, writing original music, learning covers from other artists and coming up with your own band sound. After working at these skills the bands performed at Founder's Day and also to syndicate assemblies.
The Year 7 & 8 bands competed at two Waikato-wide competitions, Band Quest (hosted by the Rock Shop) and Band Slam (hosted by Music House.)
Band Quest was held on August 23 at Clarence Street Theatre. The evening provided a cool experience for the bands, performing to a live audience. The Southwell bands played amazingly well and achieved the following awards:

Wireless, playing Place Your Hands (Reef) and Rolling in the Deep (Adele)
The Jabezios, playing Centuries (Fall Out Boy) and Warriors (Imagine Dragons) Lead guitarist: Edward O'Connor of
Apollo 6, playing Are You Gonna Go My Way (Lenny Kravitz) and Knockin' on Heaven's Door (Guns N' Roses)
Band Slam was held on November 11 at Fairfield Intermediate. The Jabezios performed It's a Long Way to the Top by AC/DC and featured Konur Yaprak on the bagpipes as a guest member. Wireless performed Jump by Van Halen, and Apollo 6 performed Are You Gonna Go My Way. The bands performed amazingly, in a field of 20 bands, and came away with the following awards:

2nd place: Renesh Paranawidana (Wireless) The Jabezios (1st place!) playing AC/DC's It's a Long Way to the Top.
It has been an awesome year for our rock bands. Big thanks to all our band coaches for helping us and for giving us so much guidance and support this year. Southwell rocks!
