                CHESS
The Chess Club has grown throughout the year, to about 50 students who are coming along to play for fun or competitively against others. There is healthy competition in our ladder boards, with significant growth being seen as students have learned more strategies through playing.
We have had the opportunity to compete in a range of competitions this year. The first of our competitions was the Junior and Intermediate Chess Power Tournaments. This allowed students to play competitively against other schools.
The second tournament was the NZ Chess Federation Waikato Regionals. Here, four teams were entered. We played some really strong teams from other schools, coming away with third and fourth place respectively in the Year 5/6 B and A competitions. The Year 7/8 B team placed fourth. This was a great competition and allowed students to face tougher competition.
The Year 7/8 A team came first, gaining entry into the NZ Chess Federation National event in Christchurch. This tournament was held during the Term 3 holidays. Here the boys,
Aaron, Lincoln, Mark and Leyu, competed in seven rounds of Chess over two days, facing schools from throughout NZ. The boys played with spirit and determination coming away with an amazing tenth place overall.
The leadership of the senior players this year has been appreciated. I have watched them grow in the way they nurture the younger players, helping them to develop their strategies and giving them the chance to see how our more advanced players play the game.
