INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGES WEEK
International Languages Week, where we celebrate our school’s diversity with some of the languages that are spoken in our kura, is one of the highlights of the Languages Department. In our chapel service at the start of the week, students and staff recite the Lord's Prayer in their native tongue:
TE REO MAAORI
A whole school initiative is to ensure that te reo and kaupapa maaori are seen within our kura each day. This is led by our Tumuaki, Mr Speedy. Kei runga noa atu ou mahi whakanui i te reo e te tumuaki. One of the first visual identifiers of our commitment to te reo is the ARO ki te HAA seat (see front inner cover.)
In the classroom, Year 7 students made kawakawa tea and kawakawa balm, and as part of a small dining experience, we made and enjoyed fried bread, which was often shared with Chaplain. Traditional Maaori games have been introduced to many year groups this year - kooruru, mahi whai, hand games and also more modern games such as Taakaro. Our senior tamariki have learnt to play cards in te reo, Ki-o-Rahi and Koruuruu to help build vocabulary, dexterity and hand- eye coordination.
Lastly, he mihi nui to the Southwell School Alumni for purchasing the new Kai Cooker that will be used in 2023 to enable us to experience haangi without having to dig a big hole and light a fire! Watch this space.

The hope is that over the next few years we will be able to identify more of our tamariki who are willing to share the love of their own language.
CHINESE
Mrs Turner and the Chinese parent group facilitated another fabulous Chinese Celebration Day in the Performing Arts Centre. Children were engaged in games and challenges, danced with the dragon and got to beat the drum.
Chinese Dining Day continues to be a favourite time of the year for our senior students, who help prepare, make and eat a wide range of Chinese cuisine both in school and during the annual trip to a Chinese restaurant to complete the whole experience.
