2022 has been another year of challenges and change. Covid lingered and so day-to-day routines could change at the drop of a hat. Whilst this could be tricky, it also created many silver-linings which might have gone unnoticed otherwise.
One big challenge which was thrown our way was that Mrs Huggins became unwell in Term 1 and was not able to return to school in 2022. This meant radical re-evalutions of how we operated and it also saw Janine Speedy stepping in to support our junior
students in Terms 2 and 3. For this, I was eternally grateful. Mrs Speedy may have missed her calling as a librarian!
In Term 4 we welcomed current parent Victoria Taylor, who was so very patient as she was dropped in the deep end, reading to Junior classes and completing a myriad of admin tasks.

 HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR
A fabulous team of Year 8 librarians were led ably by Aaron Li and Coco Huang. The Year 8s were supported by our super keen Year 6 librarians.
We launched the Kiwi Kids Book Chat podcast which aimed to highlight great kiwi kids' lit. This is currently on hold in order to allow Mrs Huggins time to recover.
Book Week saw visiting authors Stacy Gregg and James Russell entertaining our students, and in a first for Southwell, our Year 5-8 students were able to choose which author talk they attended. Also a first - James Russell was so funny he caused one junior to wet his pants with laughter.
The annual house Book Quizzes are also a highlight of Book Week. This year these were taken out by Winchester.
Book Character Day is a highlight of the year for many, and this year did not disappoint... it was a day of colour, energy and fun.
The Year 0-6 students were entertained by Perform Education in Term 2.
Brian Falkner captivated the Year 7 & 8 students in Term 3. Shooting Stars is an absolute favourite of our Year 8 students. Srikar Jandhyala and Ryan Koo interviewed Brian Falkner about his Katipo Joe series for LIANZA and the NZ Book Awards.
Karen McMillan returned to bring her unique energy to 3LSy in Term 3.
Ross Taylor signed many copies of his autobiography for Father's Day in August.
The library extension was finished (just!) and we were able to start extending our Graphic Novel collection, which was overflowing!
The annual Stocktake in Term 4 saw us scan our collection and weed 1180 books. Many of these were rehomed at Te Kohao Health.
The Murder-Mystery organised by a keen group of Year 8 girls was impressive!
