2022 saw a radical changing of the guard where Kids Lit. Quiz at Southwell is concerned.
Legendary coach, Julie Huggins, had to step away from the coaching role as she prepares to step up to the role of New Zealand Quiz Master in 2024. This is a huge honour for Julie and we know she will do a fabulous job.
This change forced us to have a long, hard look at the way KLQ at Southwell was organised and we decided that, in order to give our students a fair go at consistent training, we would trial making KLQ a summer sport option instead of trying to squeeze practices in and around everything else which happens at school in the mornings or at lunchtimes.
And as Julie stepped aside, Gayle McLean and myself stepped up and took over the training of the teams.

Over 30 students trialed for a place on one of the two teams of four, which made life tough for the new coaches.
After much deliberation and tooing and froing, the two teams selected were:
• Srikar Jandhyala, Aria Jones, Sophia Wang and Lachlan Kay
• Talia Davidson, Mia Donovan,
Anu Manda and Henry Rushbrooke
Once again, the Waikato heat was moved due to Covid and instead of being held in Term 2, it was held in Term 4, and instead of being held at night, it was held during the day, with no audience (barring the coaches.)
That being said, Wayne Mills always puts on a great show and all of the 40+ teams which competed had a great morning, showing off their remarkable knowledge of kids' literature
and being astounded by Wayne's even more phenomenal knowledge.
Our two teams represented Southwell beautifully and Mrs McLean and I couldn't have been prouder of them.
The team of Srikar, Aria, Sophia and Lachlan came in fifth, only three points off third place. The team of Talia, Mia, Anu and Henry came in another seven points behind.
In a year which has been somewhat topsy turvy, we commend both teams on their willingness to get out
there, give it a go and READING IS
