Six super rugby teams represented Southwell every Saturday with player and parent volunteer numbers steadily growing every year.
Southwell Years 1 & 2 7th Grade Rippa, coached by Mr Ogle, Mr Ellis and Mr Gerring ensured the rugby bug was caught early on for this amazing team of bouncy keen beans. We are looking forward to some of these players being unleashed into the tackle grade next year.
Mr Farrar, Mr De’Ath & Mr Willson guided the Year 4 & 5 9th Grade team through tough grading rounds and testing tackle games. This team would have won the enthusiasm and energy award for their approach to trainings and games.
Year 5 & 6 11th Grade, coached by Mr & Mrs Lilley were a slick and skilful team and a promising prospect for the future of Southwell rugby. Most, if not all, players are sure to feature in future fixture teams.
Another team full of future Southwell prep players was the Year 7 & 8 12th Grade White team coached by Mr Botha, Mr McLeod and Mrs McLaren. This team certainly punched above their weight in 2022 and played a very exciting, unpredictable style of rugby.
Year 8 12th Grade Blue, coached by Mr Trowbridge, Mr Maber and Mr Pert, played some superb champagne rugby, with moves and magic that inspired the Southwell rugby community.
Southwell combined with Marist to form a Year 8 13th Grade team, coached by Mr Tiffany and Mr Coombes. This team was the smallest in size in the open-weight division, but ended the season unbeaten, skyrocketing their confidence and skills in preparation for the 2023 High School season.
Term 4 saw the development and drive of the Girls' Rugby programme. Rippa and tackle teams were established and they achieved internal game success in a 7s-style competition.
For over 100 years, the Southwell 1st & 2nd XV teams represented the mighty Waikato in many inter-provincial games - a unique opportunity that no other Hamilton school gets to experience.
Congratulations to the folliowing players for their 2022 rugby achievements:

Southwell School Yearbook 2022
At the end of
2022 we
farewelled Mr Tiffany who will
take up a position at Hamilton
Boys' High School.
Mr Tiffany has been instrumental in the rugby programme offered at Southwell for the past 19 years, introducing the famous rugby camp at the beginning of the season, as well as teaching the Haka to our 1st and 2nd XV teams. Many boys and girls have had the opportunity to be supported and coached in rugby by Mr Tiffany over the years, with most continuing to play well into their later years. Thank you Mr Tiffany for all that you have done to support rugby at Southwell.
Damian Mills
1st XV Rugby Coach
WE APPRECIATE YOU MR T.
