FOOTBALL
2022 delivered one of the great Southwell Football seasons. It was wonderful to see striped shirts and Southwell spirit on Waikato football fields.
Football at Southwell continues to go from strength to strength with 15 teams, three of which were all girls' teams. Southwell Ferns had a particularly successful season with some gutsy performances, seeing them end the season second in the Waikato 13th Grade A1 division, as well as taking out the Southwell J.B. Cup. (The J.B. Cup is a trophy played for between the two 13th-grade teams, with a focus on team spirit.)
Another major success from the season was Southwell Kawakawa finishing the season undefeated. Playing mixed ability Saturday teams with a focus on the love of the game, team spirit and game awareness has continued to be a success for Southwell Football. The joy of playing the beautiful game, experiencing the highs and lows of a season and continuing to develop fundamental skills is enriched by getting stuck in with your mates each week. Thank you to the coaches
FOOTBALL 1ST XI BOYS
for making this possible. Your commitment, enthusiasm and striving toward achieving positive outcomes for all students is what makes this possible.
We have also seen the flow-on effects in terms of the quality of football being played at Southwell. The level of talent at the sharp end of the football program resulted in 35 students being selected to be part of the boys' senior fixture squad. A focus on playing passing football, maintaining possession and contesting 50/50 balls resulted in a sophisticated style of football that, in turn, generated some of our closest fought games, big wins and well-battled victories in recent memory. This translated across to the girls' football, with four fixtures for the Girls' 1st XI, and the inaugural girls' fixture against the Huntley School 2nd XI being a huge success.
All Southwell Football players can be proud of their efforts this season and we look forward to emptying the tank again in 2023.
