YEAR 6 SYNDICATE
The rst day when we walked into school was exciting and fun. Everybody was eager to meet the new students and teachers.
The four Year 6 teachers: Mrs van Heuven, Miss Southall, Mrs Gregory and the Dean, Mr Bryan, are all entertaining, enjoyable and unique in their own way. We had a good kick- start off for the amazing year ahead with the much loved Camp Courage in Taupo.
We enjoyed something different in Social Sciences. Since we were looking into well- being we rotated between each classroom teacher, who were all assigned to a speci c category in Well-Being (Spiritual, Social, Mental and Physical). Each teacher hit
us with a different task and we enjoyed completing them in the week we were assigned. Term 1 was a good start for the rest of the busy year, and it set us all up getting used to the amazing Year 6!
Term 2 was a great adventure. We really enjoyed writing and crafting our own unique and interesting speeches and presenting them to the class. Although we were all nervous, we tried our hardest and managed to get a great end product! If you were lucky enough to get picked to go to the syndicate nals, or even the nals, then you had a great chance to show everyone how amazing you were at doing a speech!
Term 2’s Big Idea was Innovation. During this unit, we embarked on an interesting task of taking time to plan and nd a New Zealand innovator who had created an innovative product. We worked hard to present a very informative inquiry about our innovators and their world-changing products.
During the term in Technology we created an innovative product with reusable materials. We used things from cardboard and plastic to create items such as lolly dispensers and bowls made with buttons! We then had to patent these things so nobody else in the year could copy our ideas. This taught us a lot about copyright and many things in the marketing world.
We also made the switch from summer sport to winter sport. These sports include hockey, soccer, netball and rugby! We think that Term 2 was a great time for everyone and we all learned and enjoyed many new things!
Term 3’s Big Idea was Connections. In
our classes, we did a search on our family connections in Social Studies. All of us found many things and shared it in many different ways. In Food Technology, we looked at the fresh produce in the Waikato. The classes
required creativity and inspiration for the challenges that were set. We got to cook lots of delicious recipes.
In Term 3, we were looking forward to Cross Country! This is an event you truly would never want to miss at Southwell. Using our courage from Camp, we were able to enjoy it for the big day.
During the term, it was much quieter than usual, with Opera rehearsals going, and children having to be taken out of classes. But, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was a wonderful show, from beginning to end.
Opera is de nitely a highlight of Term 3.
Term 4 started off well for Year 6. The Big Idea was Appreciation. With pantomime auditions already done, we started to put together some of our class scenes during our class drama lessons. As the pantomime was progressing we had our Athletics Day. And though many of us were nervous, we all tried our hardest, some of us even getting into nals and going on to win some awards.
Over a week of hard work passed by and we nally managed to complete the acting part of the pantomime. All we needed to do was gather together our costumes and perform the tech run and dress rehearsal. When the day came to perform, we were all excited and scared for the hours ahead but we knew that we were con dent and we were going to do well.
Every show was a great success and all of us enjoyed them thoroughly, including the audience. When the pantomime nished we all went home with smiles on our faces, proud that we had completed such a wonderful performance from the beginning to the end.
Unfortunately the year came to an end but we are positive that every student will never forget the Year 6 teachers, friends and all the fun we have had.
