CHESS
Chess is becoming increasingly popular at Southwell. The Chess Club runs every Tuesday and Thursday at lunchtime and there is always
a good turnout of pupils coming to play, varying in ability from the beginners to the experts and from Year 3 to Year 8. It is at Chess
Club that pupils may undertake to work towards different badges and certi cates from the NZ Chess Federation. These range from the Level 1 Pawn badge to the Level 4 Rook badge. Many of these badges were awarded at Assembly this year.
In Terms 2 and 3 Chess is offered as an additional sports activity
in the afternoons. We were very fortunate in having Nicole Tsoi, a previous NZ Women’s Chess Champion, coming in to tutor the players. I would also like to thank Mr Dizon for all the support he gives chess at Southwell.
We played in three tournaments locally and one nationally. In the local tournaments we did well. The senior team came second in their three tournaments and the Junior team went on to win the 2018 NZ Chess Federation Waikato region held at St Paul’s Collegiate. It was a close tournament, coming down to the last round where we managed to beat Hukanui by one point. Leon Lee, Ryan Wang, Michael Crowther and Jonathan Crowther then went on to represent the Waikato at
the nals held in Tauranga over the September holidays. The team did well with our Number 1 player, Leon Lee, coming in the top ve. I would like to thank the parents of these boys for the support they gave the team over the tournament weekend.
In Term 3 we had our inter-house Chess Tournament which also serves as the Southwell Chess Competition, to nd the best chess player at Southwell School. This competition was won by Durham House.
Chess continues to grow in popularity at Southwell and I will be looking to enter a few more competitions next year with bigger and more competitive teams.

Road Patrol this year was a great learning experience. It was an exciting opportunity and something I would de nitely do again. It always made the experience worthwhile when someone thanked you as they were crossing. It always made you feel good knowing you are helping people get safely across the road. We were always out there rain, hail or shine. But that was all part of the experience. The team this year was extremely dedicated. It was a thoroughly enjoyable time. I recommend doing it.

I was thrilled to be chosen to have the role as a Road Patroller. We were taught essential skills by the Waikato Police to ensure we had the con dence and ability to undertake our duty and ensure that everyone crosses the road safely. Working with others has been great fun, despite often being out in some crazy weather. We all worked together to help out if our turn on the roster con icted with xtures or other activities and worked well together as a team.
