Colour is strongly associated with celebration. When the house shirts are pulled on for inter-house sport or singing, colour adds to the spectacle and to the celebration.
So it was on March 7, when the Square
and Junior School became vibrant with decorative lanterns and activities as Southwell celebrated Chinese New Year. To every adult who assisted and each child who participated, thank you and well done. Likewise, colour announced the arrival of Languages Week (August 13-17), with the hanging of international ags in the Square.
We have been adding to the collection
for more than ten years, and each ag represents a Southwell family or families from that culture. New in 2018 was the ag of Kenya.
Woven into the week’s Chapel services was Italian from Mr Speedy, Zhosa and Sesotho
from Mr Rees-Gibbs and Japanese from Mr Mills.
A very warm thank-you to these students who read the Lord’s Prayer in the language of their heritage: Samuel Engelbrecht (Afrikaans), Ryan Ho (Cantonese), Pete Reungrongrat (Thai), Nuo Chen (Mandarin), Sang Woo Lee (Korean), Daniel Dizon (Tagalog), Ben Pavez (Spanish) and Reipae Dunn (Maori.)
We thank our Academic Prefects, Sarah Crowther and Blake Freyberg, for their delightful video of Southwell students showing their multi-lingual abilities! We enjoyed this ne piece of work in Assembly as a nale to Languages Week.
Lincoln House won the Library Quiz, How are You? in another language. Individual prize winners were Petal Carver (3PH), James Su (6SG), Millie Cocurullo (7BN) and Noor Maky (7BN.)
Food is a great way to learn about other cultures. Students in the Year 7 Chinese classes made spring rolls with the help
of Chinese parents. They introduced themselves using Chinese phrases they had learnt and interviewed the parents about their lives in New Zealand. They also sampled spring rolls and dumplings using chopsticks. Year 8 students went to a Chinese restaurant for an eight course yum cha lunch in November!
The Year 7 French students had to decide what they thought about eating an escargot. A highlight of Year 8 was a French meal in the school Dining Room and the perfect opportunity to speak in French.
