LIBRARY
2018 saw the Library team go from three to two, as Mrs Savage returned to the Junior School, where she has been working her magic all year. Mrs Walch and Mrs Huggins continued to y the Library ag, and it has been a big year for the Library as a physical space, with plenty of changes in how it looks.
• The rather large Library makeover (which is still in progress), which has included new shelving, new furniture and new signage.
• An overhaul of Non-Fiction, in an attempt to make that section more browsable. We have moved away from the Dewey Decimal System, and tried to simplify how books can be discovered by our students.
2018 highlights have included:
• Book Week, which included reading to the Alderton Family’s weimaraner dogs; house book quizzes; visits from not one, but two, amazing authors - James Russell and Brian Falkner; a Where’s Princess Leah? Hunt; a staff book quiz; and the ever-popular Book Character Day.
• A very special visit from up-and-coming Australian author, Jessica Townsend.
• A wonderful Choose Kind interactive display, featuring the amazing Wonder logo, recreated by Nuo Chen and Fionna Sun and highlighting over 300 acts of kindness by our students.
• Mrs Huggins’ mad Lit. Quiz training sessions.
• The Year 5 Nerd Herd Book Club.
• Visits every Tuesday from the lovely children from Little Sparrows child care, and the Southwell readers who volunteer to read to them.
• A great team of Year 8 librarians, who were encouraged to show initiative... and who did just that!
• A fabulous team of parent helpers.
• A presentation at Waikato University on the subject of Non-Fiction Picture Books.
• The lunchtime buzz.
None of this could be done without the
help of the aforementioned fabulous Year 8 Librarians, who showed great initiative and who were reliable and fun to be around, and also some positively unbelievable parent help.
In 2019 we hope to place the focus back onto the children and what we can do for them in our new-look Library.
