ENVIRO GROUP
This year, the Southwell enviro- initiatives were spearheaded by the school’s two Enviro Prefects, Catherine Cross, and Caitlin Lou.
The rst thing that they organised was a Waste Audit. This was undertaken with the help of the Waikato Environment Educator, Alex Daniels. What a messy business it was! All the bins in the school had to be collected and then the rubbish was categorised. The ndings were then used to identify what the school’s next steps should be.
It was noted that there was a huge amount of food scraps in the bins around the school. The girls realised that these scraps, that were considered waste, could be used productively
for feeding worms. Hence, the green buckets began appearing around the square. These buckets are used to collect worm food, which in turn helped to reduce the amount of waste the school produces. Worms were gifted from Marian School and they now live happily in a bathtub under the trees and are living off the students’ scraps. Next year, the Enviro Team is hoping to start another worm farm in the junior area of the school.
Plastic Free July also came and went, with the majority of staff and students making a pledge to reduce the number of one-use plastic items. The students certainly got behind this project by starting new healthy habit. It’s our hope these pledges last into the future!
The school has also continued its recycling of paper. This enables Southwell to gain free plants from an initiative called Paper4Trees. This year, the plants given to the school have been used to enhance the gardens around the boundary of the school.
