The Kapa Haka group sporting their new uniforms, thanks to the SSA
Historically, Kapa Haka at Southwell has not been a frontrunner in the Performing Arts sector, but 2019 has solidified and certified that it is here to stay and the future of Kapa Haka at Southwell will remain strong for years to come.
Fifteen years ago Mr Tiffany began a hopeful Kapa Haka group who were passionate, but were missing key aspects. After a rollercoaster 14 years of persistence and patience, this year Kapa Haka were blessed with amazing kākahu, performance clothing, and an inspirational group of over 100 students keen to put Kapa Haka on the map at Southwell.
Mr Speedy encouraged Mrs Milroy and Mr Tiffany to help bring Kapa Haka to life at Southwell. After two years of weekly morning practices,
discipline and an appreciation for Tikanga Maori, the Southwell community opened their arms to help the group.
Special thanks to the SSA for allocating funds for the group; Mrs Deane, Mrs Nordstrom, Mrs Whetu and Matua Pou for their design and waiata guidance; Chaplain for his support with practice times; the performing arts staff for their wise words; and all the teachers for their kind comments after each performance. Anaru Deane and Milan Nordstrom have been excellent student leaders and have left a lasting impression for the Kapa Haka group of 2020.
