The Southwell School Jazz Band is the most fun and memorable school band that we have been in. We have been in the band for two years and we are always excited to play and perform. In this Jazz Band we have an incredible vocalist and lots of woodwind, brass and a wide range of percusion. To be in this band you have to be Grade 3 or more.
We love to perform at many different places and to a variety of audiences and the crowd always loves us, because of our music and how we work really well together. One of the most memorable performances was the Te Awamutu Band & Orchestra Festival this year. We played amazingly and got gold, the highest you can get. We were pretty proud of ourselves knowing that all our hard work had paid off.
Overall, these past couple of years have been great. It has been a chance to meet new people and make new friends for both of us.
This year Mrs Trenwith was our brilliant conductor. We couldn’t have done it without her. So, a big thank you to her! We're looking forward to seeing how the band goes next year - we're sure it will be great.

The Symphony Orchestra at Southwell has had a highly successful year. We have all enjoyed playing together as a group and learning more about music through each other, and our amazing conductor, Mrs Trenwith. Kezia Schuitemaker and I have had the privilege to lead the Orchestra this year.
The Orchestra is one of the senior groups at Southwell, including students from Years 5 to 8. We are an auditioned group who practise early every Wednesday morning.
Our first performance was the Performing Arts Concert in Term 2. In Term 3, we attended the Te Awamutu Band and Orchestra Festival. We came up against some tough competition but we managed to take out the win, playing Capriccio Espagnol as well as highlights from Harry Potter and Grease. It was a great experience for us all.
It has been a fantastic year which I’m sure we have all enjoyed.
Yvette Scatchard
