This year we have been lucky enough to be in the Wind Band, along an amazing group of students and with Mrs Trenwith as our conductor. The Wind Band has many instruments, including guitars, flutes, trumpets, saxophones, clarinets, a trombone and a selection of percussion. The Wind Band is a group of beginner musicians who are still building up their skills. We practise on Thursday mornings before school to get ourselves to perfection.
We have worked very hard on pieces of music from movies. Our favourites were the Star Wars theme song and Accidentally In Love from Shrek.
We performed at Grandparents' Day and at the Waikato Junior Band And Orchestra Festival in Te Awamutu in August. We were placed first in the wind band category and were very happy with our achievement.
For Milan and I this has been our first experience in the Southwell School wind band and we have both loved being part of it. We have learnt so much from Mrs Trenwith and believe that we have come a long way since we started. We hope that the Wind Band keeps working hard to accomplish their pieces and that they enjoy it as much as we have.

I have had the pleasure of being a monitor / mentor with the String Orchestra this year, along with Sarita Williams. It has been a great to build special friendships with many kids in the Junior School as they embark on their first orchestral experience.
The String Orchestra is a group of 18 students from Years 2 to 8, but mostly students from Years 2 to 4. This ensemble has mostly beginner students who play a string instrument, like a violin or a cello. There are ten violinists, six cellists and two pianists.
The String Orchestra has performed many times this year such as the Performing Arts Concert in Term 2 and Grandparents' Day. They also competed in the Te Awamutu Band & Orchestra Festival and got a silver award.
I look forward to seeing the junior students grow and develop over the coming years, and playing with them in the future.
