CRICKET
2019 has been a good year for cricket at Southwell. Term 1 saw growth in numbers and brought with it healthy competition for the top teams.
The aim for training sessions became development and enjoyment which meant that for our two practices a week one would be skills- based and the other team-specific. The result of this format allowed players of different levels to develop and demonstrate their skills on a regular basis with different coaches.
For the 1st XI team, there have been a number of moments to remember this year. These included Saturday and fixture matches. Baggies were awarded to Campbell Boyd, Toby Shale and Sam Ferrar.
The 2nd XI team have thoroughly enjoyed their year and under the guidance of Mr Williams and Mr Boyes and they have won many of their matches.
The Gulley team have worked hard this year and in Term 4 were placed in the 2nd Division where they had the opportunity to compete alongside the 2nd XI. Valley made the most of opportunities in Term 4 to work with different coaches and developed their skill with the bat, ball and on the field. Special thanks to Mr Mills and Mr & Mrs Crowther for their involvement with these teams.
The Mustangs and Falcons enjoyed their training sessions with Mr Webb and Mr Streicher and have had some memorable moments over the year. The word from these coaches was that there are some players to look out for in years to come.
Other highlights for the game include the annual Major Gay Cup tournament and House Sport in Term 4. In spite of the sudden downpour which cancelled the senior event, the juniors competed in good spirit to earn points for their house groups.
I would like to express my personal thanks to all the parents and coaches who helped out with umpiring, scoring and motivation on the sideline. The level of enthusiasm and passion for the game certainly suggests that cricket at Southwell is in a great place. Bring on 2020.
