  TOUCH
Touch is a popular summer sport that continues to grow at Southwell. Not only did we have record numbers of students playing, but record numbers of awesome parents helping to coach the teams, who all played in the Swarbrick Park touch module.
The Touch Coaching Patience Award went to Mr Farrar and Mr Dinan for their efforts with the Year 1 / 2 Speedy and Swifts teams. Forward passes, dummy halves, touch and pass were just some of the tricky rules for the youngest members of the touch community to get their heads around. The amount of laughter and smiles coming from games will ensure they will be back again next season.
The Coolest Names Award went to the Year 3/4 Hot Steppers and Chilli Peppers mixed teams. Mr Mills, Mr Pou, Mrs Rickman and Mrs Hickey were a solid combination of encouragement and energy to help these
teams play next level touch with power and pride.
Year 5 and 6 are the first set of teams where students trial to get into them. A Year 5 / 6 1st VI mixed team was coached by Mrs McLeod, and a mixed development team was coached by Mr Tiffany. Offensive patterns, positions, tactical subbing and defensive policies ensured brains as well as bodies were busy.
We were lucky enough to have four teams in theYear7/8section:a1stVIBoys,a1st VI Girls, a Boys' Development and a Girls' Development. Mr Deane and Mrs Ellison achieved great results with the Boys' 1st team as they were a force to be reckoned with on fixtures, as well as in the Thursday night competition. Mrs Rudduck coached the first ever 1st VI Girls' team, who were amazing role models, not only for Touch, but for girls in sport, with their speed, power and
precision. Mr Tiffany coached both the Boys' and Girls' Development Teams to polish and promote Touch skills and drills to ensure these students kept playing this great sport long into the future.
External representative honours went to several Southwell boys and girls ranging from Year 4 to Year 8. Southwell was also proud to hear of two Southwell Old Boys who played U16 touch for New Zealand this year.
